| CF article ci dessous: Groban Rising
Singer Josh Groban continues to raise the bar on new album, tour
by Sandy Posnak
Josh Groban Where: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City When: Saturday, July 21, 8pm How Much: $75, $85, $98; available at all Ticketmaster locations
Eight years ago Josh Groban was a little known musician who loved to sing and play the piano and drums. After being introduced to Grammy-winning producer David Foster, Josh’s professional life took off at a whirlwind pace. Foster became his mentor, and within months the young Los Angeles native found himself standing in for Andrea Bocelli at the rehearsal for the 1999 Grammy Awards. During the Grammy practice he sang “The Prayer” with Celine Dion. Two years later his talent earned Groban a contract with Warner Brothers Records, and he soon became the featured performer rather than a “stand in” vocalist for others.
Today, the handsome, curly-topped 26-year-old is a mega-star with double platinum albums. His diary — if he keeps one — would name performances at the 2002 Winter Olympics; a duet with Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebo at the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway; and concerts where he shared the stage with Sting, Lionel Richie, Enrique Iglesias and other high-profile performers. He also appeared as Malcolm Wyatt in the Ally McBeal television series, and starred in a PBS special. Atlantic City audiences will have the rare opportunity of seeing Groban perform on Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in a concert sponsored by the Borgata. Grammy-nominated singer Angelique Kidjo will open the show.
Did the down-to-earth celebrity with the guy-next-door demeanor expect to attain such meteoric success when he launched his career six or seven years ago?
“No, not in a million years,” Groban told AC Weekly during a phone interview from his Los Angeles home. “I really am — and was — so focused on just the craft in it and just doing the best that I could. I was thinking to myself, ‘If I get regional theater, great. If I get Broadway, fantastic! But the idea of entering a world of recorded music where you’re working with these great Grammy-Award producers, and just kind of put at this level, it’s something you watch on TV and are entertained by it, but not anything you actually, realistically dream could happen. It’s been one great surprise after another, so I’m very grateful.”
Groban also candidly responded to questions about other aspects of his career, his latest album Awake, and his life in general.
After listening to songs from your Awake album, I have to say bravo! Loved them all, especially “You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up).”
Thanks, thank you so much.
Any comments about the album, Josh?
Well, yeah. I kind of went into it feeling more scared than I had in the last albums, and walked away from the project feeling like I had more fun than ever. ... It’s a pretty daunting task, especially since I spent a couple of years on the road, to get back into the studio and say, ‘OK, that chapter is closed, it’s time to move on.’ So I kind of made a conscious decision that [Awake] had to be a very fine line between doing what I feel I do best and doing what my fans want to hear, but at the same time not getting stale with a formula and surprising myself, surprising them. ... I wanted to try some things that I felt would not only be fun, but would also show different sides of me to my fans.
How many of the songs in the album did you pen?
On this album, including the song “Awake,” which is in the special edition, five [Groban wrote or co-wrote the lyrics and/or music to “February Song,” “Now or Never,” “Awake,” “Machine” and “Lullaby”].
Will your Boardwalk Hall concert focus primarily on this particular album?
It will. The nice thing about having three albums now is that you can kind of pick what you think are the highlights for a live show. And it is the Awake tour, so we’re pretty much going to be doing everything on the Awake album, but at the same time some old favorites. I wouldn’t be able to walk off the stage without the fans hearing them. It’s about an hour and 45 minutes to two-hour show, not including my incredible opener, Angelique Kidjo. She does 40 minutes, then I come on for about two hours.
What is your vocal range?
I would say that I’m a high baritone. I think that at the moment I’m not pulling out the high Cs on stage quite yet. I have to wait for my voice to mature a little more before I attempt to call myself a full-fledged tenor. I think my voice kind of rests in a warmer, lower place, but with some higher notes as well. It’s a growing process for sure.
How many languages do you speak?
Well, I sing in about four or five. When I was younger I took Japanese in high school. I took it for about four or five years. So far that hasn’t helped me in my music career, but for some reason that’s the language that kind of stuck. I love doing the homework of every language. When I’m set to try to sing a song in another language, the musicality of that language is so important. I think of getting the message or the emotion across even if people need to go and translate it later.
As far as conversationally, I’m always trying to pick up more and more every day. I can’t speak all of the languages fluently, but as I travel around the world they get easier and easier.
Are you self-taught as far as your singing and instrumental expertise?
I’m self-taught in piano and drums. My vocals — I’ve been in constant training for the last 10 years, mainly not to change the natural instrument, but to work to be able to have the stamina and to have the right breath support and technique that is essential.
Do you remember how old you were the first time you actually performed either for family or friends?
Yes. I was in seventh grade, so I must have been thirteen.
Do you recall what you sang?
I do. I was working in a vocal group at my high school, just kind of on a whim I decided to do it, and the teacher pulled me out from the back and said, ‘I think you’ve got a nice voice; I’d like you to sing at the school cabaret show next week. Here’s a Gershwin song called “They Say It’s Wonderful”
and I’d like you to sing this. We’ll put a three-piece band behind you.’ I was terrified — I was working on it day and night and didn’t tell my parents what I was doing. I just said, ‘You know, you should really show up at this; I’m going to do a thing.’ That’s all I said. I was kind of a shy kid. I didn’t have many friends, and I had a really hard time expressing myself. I went up and sang the song and I got a standing ovation. My mom was crying. I felt like, ‘Wow! This is my way of communicating.’ That was kind of the first eye-opening moment for me. I can show people what’s inside of my voice when I sing. It’s far better than just walking around shooting the breeze.
So that was the end of your shyness in front of people, I suppose.
Well, no, it wasn’t at all [chuckle]. To this day if I’m not in the studio and I’m not on stage, I’m generally pretty low key.
How do you maintain your stamina with such a grueling concert schedule?
Health is just the most important thing. I try to get a lot of exercise, I try to really work out a lot before I have to go on the road. I try to work on my voice three or four times a week just to get into that mentality before I hit the road. And the nice thing about being on the road is that the whole day is yours until those two hours when you have to go on. So I get more sleep when I’m on the road than I do at home. For me, being a 26-year-old guy it’s frustrating, but I know I have to have the schedule of a rock star without being able to party like a rock star.
What do you do to relax?
I love to play tennis; my dog is hilarious, I play with him a lot. When I don’t have to perform, L.A. has a great nightlife. I went out to a club with my brother last night. You know, you’ve got to go out and be stupid every now and then, but at the same time music is always kind of my pastime as well. When I’m not performing I love to write music; I love to play piano and play drums. ... So music is kind of another thing that I do when I’m not performing music!
Is there any special young lady in your life?
No, there isn’t. It’s so frustrating [laugh]. I’m never in one place long enough to meet anybody. I’m sure there are other people in this industry who are going through the same thing, but it’s one of those things. I’ve met lots of great people. You know, it’s lots of fun being single, but at the same time, as far as finding somebody to connect with to have another long relationship, I don’t think it’s in the cards for me right away. Because of all this touring I’m doing it’s not fair to the other person.
When the right one comes along you’ll know it. And you’re still so young.
That’s true.
Do you have any desire to perform in a Broadway musical?
I would love that, yes. The Broadway world has been very opened armed; I have such a great respect for that world. And having met some of my heroes in the Broadway world in the last few years, I definitely see it in my future. It’s just a matter of doing what I need to do for the fans, and doing what I need to do for the touring world, and making new music. I think as long as I feel that there’s more to create both in the live tour world and the album world, it’s hard to dedicate a year to one theater. But it will happen at some point when the role is right.
Do you have any show in mind or are you thinking about something new that might come along?
Whether I’m in it or not, I would love for something just new and brilliant to come along. Every now and then you get a Spring Awakening or a Wicked or something like that, and it just blows your mind. I’d love to wait for another one of these, but at the same time I’m a huge Sondheim fanatic and I would do any of his shows in a heartbeat.
Do you have another album currently in the works?
I just finished a Christmas album with David Foster. We recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in London. ... My fans have been waiting for this album for a long time; I’ve been waiting for the right time to do it. It will probably be the only time I’ll get to do a Christmas album, so I figured now was the right time. It will be out in November.
Is there anything else that you would like to comment on?
No, I think you covered it. I think that the live show really gives me the opportunity to show more than the album can. I’m really, really proud of this show, and invite everybody to come see it. _________________ PROUD MEMBER OF THE "K-CLUB" Proud to be a Grobanite ... I met Josh on June, 2nd and May, 13th !! | Ah ah ah !

_________________
